Hurry Up Let’s Go - Shout Out Louds
From 2003’s Howl Howl Gaff Gaff which also included The Comeback, we get a chaotic rush through the stages of a relationship from nervous interest through the fun times and right to the end which ends in heartbreak as an EKG beeps to the beat until we get the climatic finish where the relationship dies. Even with their pulsing sound the Swedish group was unable to breakthrough international until their 2010 album Our Ill Wills.
Oceans - Jay-Z ft. Frank Ocean
Something of a sleeper track from the acclaimed Magna Carta Holy Grail, Oceans had three modern legends working on it between Jay, Frank and with production by Pharrell the staying power of this song is unquestionable. In Hov’s own words to Rick Rubin, Oceans represents the duality of Black history in America from coming by sea in the slave trade to celebrating their newfound success, “On some big yacht, throwing champagne in the water”.
Bryn - Vampire Weekend
One of the first songs written by Vampire Weekend, before they were officially formed, penned on campus at Columbia by Ezra Koenig and Rostam Batmanglij who would officially form the band their Senior year. About fashion designer Bryn Lander, who is a friend of Ezra the song describes being being better when you’re around people you care about.
Jazz (We’ve Got) - A Tribe Called Quest
From one of the early rap groups that shaped hip-hop and pop culture forever we get musing wordplay from both Q-Tip and Phife Dawg over one of the most soothing, loop-able beats ever produced. Sampling Lucky Thompson’s quartet Low End Theory works as a perfect bridge between jazz and classic rap.
June On The West Coast - Bright Eyes
A simple acoustic track with a bluegrass feel we get a story from Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst about self growth on his trip through western states. With each place representing a different person and feeling we get a spectrum of Oberst’s thoughts about himself and his who he is.
